Sumter teaching zoo helping rescue primates considered nuisance in native Puerto Rico

E-mail Print PDF

BUSHNELL — Sumter County has become a safe haven for a group of Puerto Rican monkeys, the likes of which have become an increasing nuisance on the island. The Florida Teaching Zoo, based in Bushnell, is the new home to 30 patas monkeys. But the news isn’t so much that the zoo is bringing in these primates — because they have been doing that for years — but that the monkeys have become such a problem in Puerto Rico that they have to be caught and sent to other facilities or face being euthanized.
